30 Day Holiday Declutter Challenge
With the holidays coming up, that means it's time for finals and time for new things to be taking up space in a tiny dorm room. To try and minimize these effects, especially before I have to really buckle down and plan this wedding, I'm doing a mini 30 day challenge, starting today.
Rather than starting with a full blown "this amount has to be accomplished" plan, I'll instead be going through everything and deciding if it's worth paying for housing it in a storage unit over the summer or if I should just get rid of it. It's also giving me a chance to see what all doesn't need to be added to our registry either- because trust me, the initial list is long, even with both of us removing items. (To be fair, dish sets and pretty much any other kind of dinnerware are designed for the typical American family of 2 kids, but we also aren't going to assume we'll be that size family either. We do know that anytime we invite people over, we'll need at least 5 of each dining item, so no matter what, it's two sets of dishes and 2 sets of glasses.)
My system for this 30 day declutter spree is based off location:
1) dorm room- this is a big one, but will probably be one of the easiest. All of my stuff here is mostly organized and necessary to start. I have to go through my papers and my food, but other than that, there shouldn't be much to do.
2) mom's house- this one will take longer than the dorm, but like my dorm, I already have most of that purged and organized from my move last summer. I mostly just need to go through the items that got brought from the family storage unit because I am missing some things.
3) dad's house- this will be the hardest, I'm sure. Since I don't see my dad frequently (really, I see him maybe 3 or 4 times a year), the stuff I have there has piled up exponentially, even though I did a thorough purge the summer after graduation. This is where I want to focus my efforts, since I'm fairly certain I can use the furniture and decor from this room in my future house. I'm expecting to see the most bags leaving from this room.
There is a two-fold benefit to this: not only do I get to free up space, potentially making money, as well as mentally shift my preparations towards Christmas and the Sacrament of marriage, but I also get to help others by donating or selling items. Maybe others can get their Christmas presents from the items I have that are either new with tags or gently used. Maybe someone just genuinely needs what I have. Either way, this will be a good way to lose some of the focus I have on unnecessary material items.
My challenge to you, dear readers, is to do the same thing. How much will you be getting rid of to prepare for the holidays? It can even be digital clutter. I know that's where I tend to start. Let me know in the comments and on the updates!

Spring Cleaning Part 1
With spring
(and college!) just around the corner, spring cleaning has taken on a whole new
meaning for me. Especially with having divorced parents, duplicate items
abound.
I've taken a bag to goodwill about every 3 weeks for the past couple of months, but progress on that front began to stall not long before my birthday. I did manage one final bag in the past month, though.
I forgot to get some true before pictures of my room, but it's honestly such a mess. The sad thing about it all is that I've been taking small stabs at cleaning, but I never made a big enough improvement to actually make much of a difference. At least,
until this week. My goal is to stagger out the cleaning here until it's
finished by the end of spring break, but I'm attempting to make the biggest
difference before it even starts. Two weeks seems like more than enough time,
especially when it's broken down into little chunks like this.
Cleaning
Schedule:
Sunday March
11: Deep clean bathroom
Monday March
12: N/A
Tuesday March
13: Go through dresser and closet, making piles for goodwill, poshmark, and
keep. I'll have to make a list of the clothing I need before college as well. I
can't survive on two pairs of jeans and 4 pairs of shorts.
Wednesday
March 14: Closet drawers and the miscellaneous containers on the closet floor. I
honestly don't even know what's in most of them, which is probably a bad sign…
Thursday
March 15: Vacuum floor, wash mirrors and windows
Friday March
16: N/A
Saturday
March 17: Shelf beside the dresser
Sunday March
18: Catch-up day
Monday March
19: N/A
Tuesday March
20: Top shelf
Wednesday
March 21: take recycling
Thursday
March 22: N/A
Friday March
23: N/A
Saturday
March 24: Clean off next shelf down
Sunday March
25: Continue cleaning off those two shelves
Monday March
26: Clean off bottom shelf
Tuesday March
27: Catch up day
Wednesday
March 28: Under bed
Thursday
March 29: Deep clean room and bathroom
Friday March
30: N/A

(Re) Organizing the Bedroom-Week 2
Last week, I decluttered my room. This week, I'm taking inventory of the current storage I have, along with making a list of storage I need.
Currently, I have a small three-drawer cart to hold my markers, pencils, and other basics for school projects, along with a larger cart for my paint, glitter, string, and other art supplies that are used, but not as frequently.
New storage needed includes:

(Re) Organizing the Bedroom-Intro and Week 1
This is, rather unfortunately, not the first time I've had to reorganize my bedroom. Last week, I literally just sat in the floor and threw away a TON of stuff. The bad part is, I can still only see about 60% of the floor that doesn't have furniture on it. For the next 8-ish weeks, I plan on decluttering, reorganizing, and cleaning my room.
Since today is day/week 1, I'm going to be taking a bunch of pictures of the after and decluttering. I'll upload my pictures next week, as I don't have my USB cable with me to transfer my pictures over.
I'm using A Bowl Full of Lemons, Organized Charm, and iHeart Organizing to help me with clever organizing ideas.
Basically, I've spent about 8 hours today, sorting through all my books, separating them into piles: sell, donate to goodwill, and keep, and my floor is almost entirely clutter free, along with my closet. All that I have left to declutter are my dressers and under my bed. I plan on doing that tomorrow morning, as soon as I get up.
I currently have two large bags full for Goodwill, along with three medium sized canvas bags of books to sell on eBay. That's not even including the trash.
Week 1: Declutter
Week 2: Take inventory of storage and make list of storage needed.
Week 3: Buy or DIY the storage needed
Week 4: Organize the dressers and nightstand
Week 5: Organize the books, movies, and CDs
Week 6: Organize the craft supplies
Week 7: Organize the closet
Week 8: Clean!
UPDATE: I have everything de-cluttered, except for under the bed. I don't exactly have a way to get under there, along with a third Goodwill bag. I can't wait to see how the remaining weeks go!
